Izzy Harris 7 Años Roger Gual October 28, 2016 Movie Spain
In the movie 7 Años there are four business partners who are struggling to pick a fall guy to go to jail due to their illegal dealings. It connects to the American culture along with the Spanish culture by showing there is embezzlement and fraud in both. The movie hits on the Spanish culture by talking about their justice system including the IRS and the jailing system. It mentions that in Spain 94% of the convict in prisons are male while the remaining 6% are female. Very closely related to the American gender incarceration gap, which is 90.6% male and 9.4% female. The movie also shows how the Spanish culture values loyalty and dedication, which can not be as enforced for the American culture.
The central theme of the movie 7 Años is loyalty. Throughout the movie the characters are faed with the task of picking who should go to jail and save the rest of the team. Although no one directly steps up to take the fall, in the end the character Louis is willing to go to jail in order to be loyal to his friends are business partners. The rest of the team is willing to scarifies both money and shares in the company to lessen the blow for the character who is willing to go to jail. The movie suggest that loyalty is a big factor in the Spanish culture, however; in the current status on the US loyalty is becoming less and less. Other cultures on the other hand also value loyalty, such as the British and the French.
